Ernie spent Saturday afternoon going over every note left by Timothy before his death. There seemed to be a file missing, and that’s what confused him most. Before the other men went home on Saturday, he asked them one by one if they’d seen a file that Timothy was working on.

No one had. Just as Aaron was leaving for the evening, he turned around and looked at Ernie. “You know you really should go home to your wife. She’d love to serve you supper that wasn’t cold for a change.” With those words, Aaron closed the door.

Ernie shook his head. He’d forgotten again. Standing up, he pulled on his red serge jacket over the top of his shirt, and he walked to the general store. He needed to find a nice gift for his wife so she could forgive him. He didn’t think she even knew that she should be angry, but he did. He was glad he’d found a wife that wouldn’t be angry when he did things wrong, but it only made him angrier with himself.

He walked to the front of the store and paid for the vase, asking Old Joe to wrap it up for him. “It’s a gift for my new bride.”

“She sure is a beauty, Ernie. I don’t know where you found her.”

“She’s pretty special, isn’t she? I think she’s the perfect wife for me . . .” Ernie paid the man cash and took the wrapped vase. “Thank you!” He hurried out the door, determined to be home at a decent hour for the first time since he’d married her.

When he walked in the door, he was a bit surprised over her appearance. The house was perfect as always, and the supper she was cooking smelled delicious . . . but her hair was hanging down from its usual bun, her dress covered in dust. “What have you been doing all day?” he asked.

“Well, I left the house after lunch so I could go see Elizabeth, and I met this older woman on the street.” Josie left out the part about trying to bribe people to be her friend with cookies. He wouldn’t approve, and he therefore didn’t need to know about it. “I told her I was looking for someone to help, and she happened to have this friend who is housebound. I went to see her, and there was so much to do! I cleaned her kitchen, made her supper, cleaned her parlor and dining room, and I even stripped her beds. I’ll wash all of her bed linens on Monday with our laundry and take it all back on Monday afternoon. I figure I can have her house ship shape by Friday afternoon, and then
